The State of Indian Economy - 2010
As we move into the New Year, it is time to take stock of the state of our economy-the achievements in 2010 and the challenges we face in 2011.The most outstanding achievement has been the recovery from the economic slowdown that we have been facing since 2008, as a consequence of the global downturn. It is now being recognised the world over that the management of our economy during this period has been appreciable and we have been able to minimise the effects of global recession on our economy. India continues to be the 2nd fastest growing economy of the world.

Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Or Parliament's 'Public Accounts Committee' (PAC)?

JPC or PAC? Or Why Not Both?

It is puzzling as to why the BJP is making such a fuss over Public Accounts Committee chairman Murli Manohar Joshi’s willingness to look into the Prime Minister’s offer to appear before it in the 2G spectrum scam. Dr Joshi’s stand in no way scuttles the Opposition’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee to look into the whole issue of accountability and governance in the 2G scam. One can understand the chagrin of the Congress Party about giving in on the JPC demand as it fears the Opposition will drag on this issue of colossal malfeasance indefinitely so that the Congress’ image takes a beating over a longer period. The Congress, understandably, is worried about the BJP and the Left’s political agenda. Going by the record of the JPC in the 2001 stock market scam, the committee took over one-and-a-half years to present its report, and, despite its very significant recommendations in December 2002, the government and the regulatory bodies are still to implement some of those that remain very relevant. Even the main players in the stock market scam have not been adequately punished till today. So, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj’s contention that a JPC goes further than the PAC in that it deals with accountability and governance could be a case of expecting too much. Besides, her crusade for a JPC in the furtherance of accountability appears to be lip service considering the BJP’s role in the Karnataka mining scam.

Quantum Realm
Top 10 Science Breakthroughs of 2010
A mechanical device that operates in the quantum realm tops the Sciencejournal's list of advances in 2010.
Until this year, all human-made objects have moved according to the laws of classical mechanics. Back in March, however, a group of researchers designed a gadget that moves in ways that can only be described by quantum mechanics — the set of rules that governs the behaviour of tiny things like molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles. In recognition of the conceptual ground their experiment breaks, the ingenuity behind it and its many potential applications,Science has called this discovery the most significant scientific advance of 2010.

Its the Time for Positive Change

 A Time For Positive Change

Life without celebration is like a long road without an inn, said the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. As his pregnant saying hints, celebrations are not just occasions to uncork the champagne, but also junctures to pause, relax and take stock. New Year has become one such moment in the flow of time for the world as well as India.
An average Indian cannot be faulted for grimacing, and perhaps even sighing, on New Year’s Eve, for when one casually sums up the year that has passed what will float into the mind are words like scam, spectrum, Radia, Raja and Kalmadi that together create a bleak collage. But taking stock means stepping back and looking at the big picture. And the big picture is not as dreary or dark as one might think (unless you are an incorrigible pessimist). People who cry hoarse about scams would also have to admit that it was the robust institutional mechanisms of the country that brought them to light. Some journalists had egg on their face after Radiagate. But that does not obscure the fact that it was other journalists who unearthed the scam in the first place. Strange as it may sound, the exposure of corruption and the noisy rows it creates are a sign of a vibrant polity in a neighbourhood where the dread silence of dictatorship is common.
