Rajput dynasties

Rashtrakutas
  • Dantidurga was the founder of Rashtrakuta dynasty; he was feudatory of Chalukyas later killed Kirtivarman II, the chalukya emperor
  • Krisha I constructed a magnificient rock cut monolithic temple at Ellora known as Kailasa.
  • Amogavarsha was a patron of Jainism and PatronisedJinasena the author of Adipurana.
  • Amogavarsha wrote Kavirajamarga, the earliest work on poetics in Kannada language. He built the city ofManyakheta.
  • During the reign of Indra III, Al Masudi visited his empire.
  • Krishna III was a great warrior who led an expediation to Chola Kingdom and      in the Battle of Takkolam he reached upto Rameswaram.
  • The last ruler was Karka II was killed by his feudatory Taila II of Chalukya dynasty.
Pratiharas

The Pratiharas were one of the thirty six clans of the Rajputs belonging to Agnikula family; arrived during during the invasion of the Huns and settled in the Punjab Rajputana region. Nagabhatta I was the first ruler of the Pratiharas who ruled from (730-756AD) over Broach and Jodhpur, and extended his dominion till Gwalior ; repulsed the invasion of Melchhas Arabs of Sind; Vatsaraja defeated Dharmapala, King of Bengal but defeated by Rastrakuta King Dhruva; Nagabhatta II was the next ruler who shited the capital to Kanuj ; defeated Devapala; next important ruler wasMihira Bhoja; Arab traveler Sulaiman visited; Mahendrapala I succeeded him; Patronised Rajasekara who wrote Karpuramanjari, Balaramayana, Balabharata etc; During the reign of Mahipala, Arab traveler Al Masudi visited.


Palas

Gopala was the founder of Pala dynasty; elected to throne by leading men of Bengal; built the monastry of Odantapuri; Dharamapala succeeded him; involved in a power struggle with Prathihars and Rashtrakutas; founded the famous monastry ofVikramasila and a vihara at Somapura. Devapla was the next ruler; regarded as the most powerful of Pala rulers; he granted five villages to Silendra king to endow monastry at Nalanda; The Arab traveler Sulaiman refers Pala Kingdom as Rushmi. During the period of Mahipala, Rajendra chola invaded Bengal.

The Senas

After the fall of the Palas, the Senas came to prominence in Bengal Described as Brahmana Kshatriya caste. Samantsena was the founder of this dynasty. He was succeeded by Hemant Sena who could not consolidate his position in Bengal. Vijayasena succeeded Hemantasena and ruled from (1095-1158). Vijayasena was succeeded by his son Balalsena. He is also known for reorganizing the caste system in Bengal. He also was a reputed scholar and author of his times and is famous for his two works Dansegara and Adyuta Sagara. Lakshamanasena succeeded at the age of 60During this period, Bengal was invaded by Muhammad-bin-Bakhtya Khilji. Lakshmansena was defeated and had to flee. He died in 1205AD. With the development of Sanskrit literature, eminent poets like Jayadeva the author of the Gita Govinda were patronised during the rule of the Senas.

Paramaras

Upendra was earliest known king of Paramaras with Dhara(Dhar) in M.P. was the capital of Paramaras. Munja was the greatest of this dynasty. Taila II invaded his kingdome 6 times but he was repulsed by Munja Munja. At last, he launched a campaign against Tailla II but he was killed. Bhoja was greatest He is credited with authorship of more the 23 books on varied subjects. Built famous temple of Nilakantesvara at Udayapur in Bhilsa. The last King Mahlak Deo was defeated by Ala ud din Khalji.

Solankis

Mularaja founded the Chalukyas or Solanki kingdom withAnahilapataka as capital. During the reign of Bhima I, Mohamed Ghazni plundered Somanatha temple. Jayasimha Siddaraja was a great patron of letters Hemachandra who wrote Siddha Hemachandra lived in his court and built Rudra Mahakala at Siddhapura. His successor Kumarapala embraced Jainism and forbade animal sacrifice in 1178 AD. Muhammad Ghuri invaded Gujarat, Solankis under Mularaja II’s mother defeated them. The last ruler was Karna. When Ala ud din Khalji conquered Gujarat, Karna fled to Devagiri. His queen Kamala Devi was captured by Ala ud din Khalji.

Chahamanas

The main branch of Chahamanas ruled Sakambhari, modern Sambhar in Jaipur. Ajayaraja II founded the city of Ajayameru or Ajmir. Vigraharaja III was the author of Harikeli Nataka. Prithviraja III was the most famous king. As he was not invited to the svayamvara of Samyukta, the daughter of Jayachandra Gahadavala, he carried the princes by force. He gought the famous battles of Tarain I and Tarain II wars with Muhammed Ghori. His court poet composed Prithvirajavijaya.

Gahadvalas

The Gahadavals was founded by one Yasovigraha with Kanuja as capital. His son Chandradeva imposed a tax called Turushkadanda to meet the war expenses against the Muslims. During the reign of Govindachandra, his minister Laksmidhara wrote Kritya Kalpataru. Jayachandra was last great monarch of Kanuj. In 1193 he was defeated by Muhammed Ghuri at Chandwar . He patronised Sriharsha who wrote well known Naisadhacharita, Khandana Khandakahya etc.

Chadellas

Nannuka founded the dyanasty, their earliest capital was Khajuraho in Bundelkhand. The country ruled by Chandellas came to be known as Jejabhukti after king Jayasakti. Chandellasbuilt the world famous temples at Khajuraho. Yasovarman built Chaturbuja temple, Dhanga built Viswanatha, Jinanatha and Vaidyanatha temples.

Kalachuris & Tomars

The Kalachuris of Chedi also known as kings of Dahala mandala with their capital at Tripuri near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Tomars was one of Rajput clans, Anangpal Tomar founded Delhi in 736

Architecture

The temple architecture of North India came to be known as Naraga style. The most important feature is the cruciform ground plan and curvilinear tower(Sikhara)
Temples of Orissa Parasurameswara(8AD) , Mukteswara (9 AD), Lingaraja temples(1100 AD) of Buvaneswar Jaganatha temple of Puri (12th AD) Sun temple of Konark built by Narasimha II in 1238-64 A.D.
